Description
It started off as the 1892 and then changed to the 1897. After WW1 it came back as the 39. It was made from 1922 until 1936. After that it came back as the 39A. Marlins record keeping was very bad. As I understand it the serial numbers started from 1 to 10,000. Then for some reason they started adding an 'S' to the serial number. Up for sale is a limited production Marlin 39 TDS lever action.22 caliber carbine with a 16 ½”inch barrel. According to the serial number Marlin produced this little rifle in 1995. The straight grip stock and forearm are American Walnut with excellent figure, deep cut checkering, and a satin finish.Rifle is completely original and unaltered. Marlin Model 336 and Models 39-A and 39-M manufactured from 1948 to 1968: A one or two letter code was used to designate the year of manufacture. The first two digits of the serial number designate the year of manufacture, either as the last two digits of the year (in 1969-71) or as a number. This is not a suitable gun for silhouette IMO. But if you stumble on one that has a serial number that starts with TDS, that is the first year of manufacture and has some collectable value I gather. The TDS also replaced the now discontinued Mountie. 2000: Marlin buys H&R aka Harrington & Richardson of Gardner, MA. In an odd way, I wonder if. The serial number starts with an L and then has 5 digits after that. An 'L' prefixed Marlin serial number indicates a 1952 manufacturing date. That would make it a Third Model, Second Variation. Your rifle looks to be a 'Mountie' config, but the first Mounties were introduced in 1953.
